All About Skateboarding- From Mild to Extreme

It’s hard to believe but skateboarding has been around for almost 50 years at this point. What started as a small niche and trend in the 1960’s has developed into one of the major individual sports across the globe. More young people are getting involved than ever before, and skateboarding is clearly enjoying its popularity and its growth into the mainstream, despite its counter-culture history and beginning.

Right now it’s estimated that about a third of all skateboards are under the age of 18. That’s a really big figure and it shows you how much of a youth driven sport this is. It also shows that in the future there will be more and more people participating, as these kids grow older and continue to participate, and more youth get involved after them as well.

It certainly is quite the change in culture and acceptance from when skateboarding really first premiered. As mentioned, it was somewhat of a counter-culture activity at the time, and it was practiced by only a small group of people before it started to grow and emerge. Longboards were used as opposed to the shorter boards of today, and instead of hugely complex aerial tricks and maneuvers, riders skated through emptied out pools and down the streets.

Street skating and freestyle skating are both still very popular today. There are some fantastic skate parks where you can go to trick on a variety of different ramps and platforms, and different setups and so forth. However you can also just pick any street, parking lot or park and use what’s available to you such as curbs, benches, fire hydrants and more.

However, what really captured the public’s attention and brought the sport to the mainstream was the half pipe or vert skating. Riders in a half pipe get a ton of air time, which allows them to perform some sensational and complex tricks. The one man most responsible for this is the legendary Tony Hawk. When he completed the 900, which is three and a half full rotations in one jump, it was truly a monumental moment.

It launched himself, the entire sport and really the whole culture of the X Games to the next level. Now the X Games are one of the major worldwide sporting competitions, and the extreme sport of skateboarding has its own professional tour which makes stops all around the world. It’s a long way from empty pools and long boards, and skateboarding is only going to continue to grow and expand even more.

If you’re ready to get into skateboarding, whether it’s by participating yourself or just by watching on television, there has never been a better time. It’s really mainstream and widespread these days, which means you can find high level competitions to watch all of the time, and you can quickly learn, experiment and innovate for yourself. Be sure you approach learning how to skateboard carefully however, and utilize all of the proper equipment and safety gear.

Kids Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is a great way for kids to explore the outdoors, stay in shape, or just have fun. Racing down the side of a mountain is a lot of fun indeed, although it can also be quite extreme. Even being extreme, if you ride with caution and wear the appropriate safety gear, it can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Styles of Mountain Biking
Mountain biking can best be characterized into three different styles – downhill, free riding, and cross country. Even though the different styles are similar
in some ways, they still require different skills. The style that you pick will determine the type of bike you get.

Best Locations for Mountain Biking
The sport can best be thought of as biking on an unpaved surface. Many areas throughout North America have specific locations designed for mountain biking. Before you decide to go down a trail, you should always check with your local park to get the routes, regulations, and any rules that they may have.

You can also find groups that have mountain bike rides and competitions. You can look on the internet or even in a local paper and see exactly what’s available in your area. You may be able to find groups for the more advanced riders as well as beginners.

Becoming a Great Biker
Endurance and stamina are a must for a great mountain biker. It will also take ambition and practice to succeed as well as conquer the course. Like all other sports, it takes time and practice. Those just beginning will have to get past the bumps and bruises from falling off the bike.

Selecting your Mountain Bike
The bike you select is more of a personal choice, and a big determining factor on the type of riding you will be doing. Bikes come in all styles, shapes, and prices, which will make selecting one for yourself very difficult indeed.

You should use the internet, ask friends, and visit local bike stores to help you look for a bike, even do some price comparisons online as well before you make a purchase. Before you buy a bike, always ask to try it out first. A great mountain biker will become one with his or her own bike. When buying, make sure you check for comfort, how it fits, even how it is geared.

Staying safe when riding Mountain bike riding on unpaved roads can be
dangerous, so anytime you are riding, you should wear a helmet, along with knee and elbow pads. If you are following a group or riding in the woods you should strongly consider a pair of goggles as well. Safety should be your top priority and never taken lightly anytime you are mountain biking.

The Rise and Popularity of Snowboarding

By now most everyone has heard of, if not tried, snowboarding. It is quickly becoming one of the most popular extreme kid sports as more and more are converting from skiing to snowboard. Snowboarding is actually simpler for young kids than skiing is because the width of the board is wider and easier to balance on. In the last decade snow boarding has gone from skateboarding on snow, to the Olympics quicker than you one could ever imagine.

SnowboardingSnowboarding really got its start when a man by the name of Sherman Poppen decided to nail kid’s skis together in an attempt to improve their skills. As he saw how quickly kids took to this and how much fun they were having his entrepreneurial side took over and he went into mass production of the ‘snow board’. Millions of dollars and thousands of happy boarders later, Sherman will always be remembered for bringing snow boarding to the masses.

Snowboarding was very quick to change from a hobby to a professional sport, requiring skills, determinations, and agility in equal measure. The first official competition took place in 1982 and since then snow boarding has seen more and more competitions take place. As the competitions started to spread, so did the extreme nature of the sport and competitors alike took it to a whole new level. The kind of things that people are doing these days weren’t even heard of 10 years ago.

The biggest achievement for snow boarding occurred in 1998 when snowboarding made it to the winter Olympics. Held in Nagano Japan, the sport was given more than its fair share of coverage. Since that time the sale of snowboarding and snowboarding equipment has said to have risen by 47%.

The rise of snowboarding has not just been a result of competition. It is also because it fits under the category of a fun, exciting extreme sport and more importantly; a sport that can be done freestyle! Making appearances on TV alongside motor cross, skateboarding, and surfing, snow boarding has also been aided by the personalities that have come to be so well known in extreme sports. The fact that the sport is open, flexible, and adaptable appeals to the masses. You can gently slide down relaxing snow mounds, screech down steep hills, or flip, twist, and slide on equipment and man made ramps. The potential is only limited by the individual.

Many kids who have attempted skate boarding make a natural transition into snowboarding and vice versa. Most kids love the freedom it allows, the speed and adrenaline, and appeal in the sport itself. Regardless of age many ski clubs offer snowboarding lessons. (I took one myself with my 3 year old and learned a ton!) The course teaches the basics as well as how to be safe… the biggest safety tool is the helmet. Getting the kids accustomed to wearing it right from the start will save you years of hassle latter. Most ski clubs and resorts require helmets for everyone so hoping it won’t ever even be an issue.

Athletically speaking, kids and adults need to have good balance, a very strong midsection, and strong legs as it’s a tremendous workout. Once you get used to the feeling of the board and the snow beneath your feet it’s just an amazing experience. Watching your child succeed and discover their new ability is such an awesome feeling too. Snowboarding is also one of those sports that’s fantastic for kids that are not comfortable with team sports. You can still encourage them and cheer them on without them feeling the pressure of having to succeed or stand behind a team. Everything they do is up to them, big or small and it is all so rewarding.
